How to Check Your ITR Refund Status (AY 2026-27)
Filed and waiting for your refund? Here's how to track it and what to do if it's stuck.
How long it takes
Most refunds arrive within 2–5 weeks of e-verification. The clock effectively starts when you verify — so an un-verified return means no refund at all.
Where to check
- Log in to the income tax e-filing portal.
- Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns.
- Open the return for AY 2026-27 to see its status (processed, refund issued, etc.).
You can also track it on the NSDL/TIN refund status page using your PAN and the assessment year.
Common statuses
- Return processed, refund issued — money is on the way to your bank.
- Under processing — wait; it hasn't been assessed yet.
- Refund failed — usually a bank issue (see below).
- Adjusted against outstanding demand — a past due was set off first.
If your refund is delayed or failed
- Pre-validate your bank account on the portal and make sure it's linked to your PAN with a matching name.
- Ensure your return is e-verified.
- Raise a refund re-issue request if it failed.
