ITR Last Date & Late-Filing Penalty AY 2026-27 (Section 234F)

The deadlines for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), and exactly what it costs you to miss them.

The penalty for filing late (Section 234F)

  • Total income above ₹5 lakh: late fee of ₹5,000.
  • Total income up to ₹5 lakh: late fee of ₹1,000.

It's not just the fee

  • Interest (Section 234A): 1% per month on any unpaid tax, from the due date until you file.
  • Lost losses: business and capital losses can't be carried forward if you file after the due date.
  • No regime choice: a belated return is taxed under the new regime only.
  • Delayed refund: the later you file, the later your refund.

Missed 31 December too?
