Belated, Revised & Updated (ITR-U) Returns AY 2026-27

Missed the deadline, or spotted a mistake after filing? There's a way to fix it — here's which one you need.

The three types at a glance

TypeWhen to useDeadline (AY 2026-27)Cost
BelatedYou missed the original due date31 Dec 2026₹5,000 / ₹1,000 late fee + interest
RevisedCorrecting a return you already filed31 Mar 2027No extra tax
Updated (ITR-U)Fixing/declaring after those windows close31 Mar 2031 (48 months)Additional tax (see below)

Belated return

File up to 31 December 2026 if you missed the 31 July / 31 August deadline. You'll pay the Section 234F fee (₹5,000, or ₹1,000 if income ≤ ₹5 lakh) plus interest, you can't carry forward most losses, and it's taxed under the new regime only. Details: last date & penalties.

Revised return

Made a genuine error (missed income, wrong deduction) in a return you already filed? You can revise it any number of times up to 31 March 2027 for AY 2026-27, with no additional tax. This is the cleanest way to fix mistakes.

Updated return (ITR-U)

If the belated/revised windows have closed, an ITR-U lets you come clean up to 48 months from the end of the assessment year (so up to 31 March 2031 for AY 2026-27). It requires additional tax:

Filed withinAdditional tax
12 months25% of tax + interest
24 months50%
36 months60%
48 months70%

ITR-U can't be used to claim a refund or reduce your tax — only to declare more income/pay more tax.
